Buranga (Upendra Mishra)

This is the çrépät (birthplace) of Upendra Mishra, the grandfather of  Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Sri Jagannath Mishra, the father of Mahaprabhu, is the fifth son of Upendra Mishra. In kåñëa-lila, Upendra Mishra was Parjanya Gopa, the father of Nanda Mahäräja. Mahaprabhu came to Buranga a Sunday in Chaitra month, while touring East Bengal. Locals say that at first, Mahaprabhu didn’t go to Dhaka Daksinä, but returned Navadvépa. Upendra Mishra became very elated upon seeing Nimäi Paëòita. Nimäi’s grandmother served Him jackfruit. Then Mahäprabhu showed them His original form. Thus he blessed His grandparents.

At present there is a nice small temple there. The ancient deity was sent to Silchar in Assam during the war of 1971, so a new deity was installed here.

How to Go There

Buranga is in Sylhet district. Take a bus from Sylhet to Goalabazar. The temple is about 6 km from there.
