Gopinathpur (Nandini and Jangali)

Gopinathpur is situated in Akkelpur Upazila of Joypurhat district. Here lived Mata Nandini, who was the disciple of wife of Çré Advaita Äcärya, Çré Sétä Öhäkuräni.

Gaura-gaëoddeça-dépikä refers to Nandiné, who is Jaya-Vijaya in Kåñëa-lélä, and took birth as Nandini and Jangali in Kali-yuga and became the companion of Sétä-devé. Mata Nandini was a special maidservant of Sétä devé. When Sétä-devé was living in Çäntipura, Nandini served her for a long period.

Nandini Mata came to Gopinathpur in North Bengal as per the instruction of Sita thakurani. A gåhastha donated a house to her, as Mätä was living as a mendicant. There she performed her devotional service and displayed many miraculous feats. Nandini Mata also constructed a temple in Puré Dhäma.

From 1520 to 1530, the Sultan of Bengal became pleased with her devotional service and hospitality. Inscribing a copper plate, the Sultan dedicated Gopinathpur and Gopalpur village as temporality. A temple was constructed there using construction design of the Pal period. In the Bengali year 1304, the temple was destroyed by an earthquake. Between 1928 and 1936, the temple was reconstructed.

Still now some ancient artistry is evident in the main building. The temple stands 50 feet tall, and ärati is performed in the morning and evening, with about 20 kg of rice offered to the Lord at noon. A great religious festival has been held here every year and would previously last for a month; now it is for 13 days. The area is beautiful, with panoramic scenes, shaded green areas, and ancient traditional architectural styles. Lovers of nature and persons with wanderlust from distant places regularly visit.
