“ISKCON Sylhet will distribute food till then As long as there is flood”
~ Srimat Bhakti Advaita Navadwip Swami Maharaj
The flood situation in Sylhet and Sunamganj has reached terrible conditions due to the continuous heavy rainfalls and landslides. This flood has outsailed the severity of the floods of 1988, 1998 & 2004 by the large-scale catastrophic humanitarian situation.
This is the third flood of the season. Numerous people in the region are being affected by natural calamities frequently. Experts opine that the leading cause of the floods is heavy rains in Bangladesh and various eastern states of India. Almost all the districts of Sylhet division have been inundated in three days of rain in Cherrapunji, Meghalaya state of India, which is the rainiest area in the world. Assam and Meghalaya have received more than 2,500 mm of rainfall in the last three days, the highest in the last 27 years.
In this situation, the houses of millions of people, the crops of the fields, everything including the cattle are submerged under water. Hundreds of thousands of people have been left homeless. Many important places such as power stations, railway stations, and bus stands have flooded underwater. Not only that, flood water has entered the Sylhet Osmani International Airport as well. Teaching has been stopped in at least 300 educational institutions, including Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. People in flood-affected areas are rushing to higher grounds, schools, or Cyclone-shelters in search of a safe roof over head.
The miserable conditions of poor people have been aggravated as they do not have any job to do. They are suffering from severe scarcity of food, drinking water, and safe accommodation. In this situation, there is no alternative to intensify the rescue and relief activities for the flood victims. Communication with the flood-affected areas has been cut off. Due to the inundation of flood waters in different areas, it has become difficult to deliver food to them. Mobile network not available and the family or relatives cannot get the news of who has taken shelter.
Although the government has distributed relief in different places, many people have not been able to get a handful of food . HH Bhakti Advaita Navadwip Swami Maharaj said, “Many people have become helpless due to the flood in Sylhet. We are going to the flood victims’ homes to provide food assistance as much as possible. Apart from Sylhet city, cooked foods are distributed among 3-4 thousand people in nearby Upazilas daily. Besides food, ISKCON distributes clothes, essential medicines, tablets for water purification, and other necessary help like medical care.
He further added that ISKCON would remain by the side of the flood victims till the flood situation returns to normal.
With the cooperation of all, relief work can be served on a broader scale.
