Jargrama (Srila Dhananjay Pandit)

Jargram, situated at Roujan in Chattogram district, is blessed by the appearance of an associate of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu named Srila Dhananjay Pandit. He was very dear to Nityananda Prabhu.

Vasudama sakhä yash ca panditah çré-dhanaïjayah, “Kåñëa’s friend Vasudama became Dhanaïjaya Paëòita in Gaura-lélä. (Gaura-gaëoddeça-dépikä 127).

He was a dear servant of Lord Balaräma, named as Vasudham-sakhä and one of the dvadasa gopala in His previous pastime. He was born to Çrépati Bandopadhyaya and Kälindé Devé in Jargrama on the fifth day of the waxing moon in the month of Chaitra. He was full of devotion from a very early age and would prostrate himself in obeisance before Tulasé Devé three times a day. His parents married him to a pretty girl named Haripriyä when he was very young. But he was strict in his stoicism and came to Navadvépa shortly after His wedding on pilgrimage. He surrendered all his possessions, given by his father, to Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu’s lotus feet. In this regard Vaiñëava-vandana says:

vilasi vairagi vandon pandita dhanaïjaya
sarvasva prabhure diya bhanda hate laya

He went to Sitalagrama after taking darçana of Mahäprabhu following Lord Nityänanda’s order. He began to serve the deity of Çré Gauräìga and Çré Gopénätha, and converted many robbers and atheists. After that, he went to Våndävana, residing for some days in Sāṅcaḍāpāṅcaḍā. He stayed in Våndävana  for some time and alsoin a village named Jalandi. Finally he returned to Sitalagrama. Jargrama, Sitalagrama, Sāṅcaḍāpāṅcaḍā and Jalandi, all four places are know as his Sripata. He has been glorified in many books, including both Çré Caitanya-bhägavata and Çré Caitanya-caritämåta. Nityänanda Prabhu took up permanent residence in his heart.

nityānanda-priyabhṛtya paṇḍita dhanañjaya
atyanta virakta, sadā kṛṣṇa-premamaya

The sixteenth dear servant of Nityānanda Prabhu was Dhanañjaya Paṇḍita. He was very much renounced and always merged in love of Kṛṣṇa. (Cc Ādi-lélä 11.31)

dhanañjaya pandita—mahanta vilaksana
yanhara hridayae nityananda sarvaksana

Srila Dhananjay Pandit was a stalwart preacher of bhägavata-dharma, so Lord Nityänanda made His permanent residence in his heart. (Cb Antyā-lélä 5.733)

He entered into eternal pastime in Sitalagrama and his samädhi has been estabilished there. Just to the left at the entrance to Sitalagrama stands a small Tulasé Devé altar: this is the site of Dhanaïjaya Paëòita’s samädhi. Çré Gauräìga and Çré Gopénätha are still being worshipped in Sitalagrama. In Jargrama, 108 Çiva-liìgas are being worshipped.
