Mogdova (Sri Jagannath Chakraborty)

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu addressed Sri Jagannath Chakraborty as “Mämu” (maternal uncle), and so everyone referred to him this way. He was a nephew of Mahäprabhu’s maternal grandfather, Çré Nélämbara Cakravarté. Mämu Öhäkura lived in the village Mogdova in Faridpur district. He was given the responsibility of serving Çré Öoöä-gopinatha in Néläcala after the disappearance of Çré Gadädhara Paëòita. He is the gopé Kalaväsiné in Våndävana-lélä.

It is said in Çré Narottama-viläsa that when Narottama däsa Öhäkura visited Jagannätha Puré, he saw Mämu Öhäkura barely alive due to separation from Mahäprabhu. Later, Mämu Gosäi showed Narottama däsa the places in Néläcala, where Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu and His devotees performed their léläs. It is thoroughly described in the Eighth Wave of Bhakti-ratnäkara.

Seeing Narottama däsa Öhäkura, Mämu Öhäkura immediately embraced him. Bathed in tears, he continued to say again and again “Only by the grace of Lord could I meet you. I have heard of you from all the visiting Vaiñëavas and desired to meet you. Finally it has happened!”

Mämu Öhäkura then took Narottama to a solitude place and continued to say, “My lord Gadädhara absorbed himself in reading Çré Bhägavata  while he sat here.  It seems that a thousand rivers of love were flowing from the commentary when explained by him. Who doesn’t want to listen to that speech?”

In this way, Mämu Öhäkura described the virtues of Gadädhara Paëòita to Narottama däsa Öhäkura in tear-filled eyes and a broken heart. Then he narrated the virtues and léläs of Mahäprabhu and His associates to Narottama däsa.

The Gaura-Gadädhara deity in the Gopénätha temple was established by Mämu Öhäkura. He served the Öoöä-gopénätha deity until his old age, when he could no longer offer a garland to the deity. In compassion, Gopénätha sat in padmäsana so that Mämu Öhäkura could easily decorate, garland, and serve Him.

In the past, the Vasudeva deity was worshipped in Mogdova. Later this deity was worshipped in Futibari, which is 20 km away. After that, the deity was served in Khatra, Pranapur. Unfortunately the deity was stolen, and at present, there is an earthen deity in its place. There is no sign of Jagannätha Äcärya’s house in Mogdova.
