Tapana Mishra, the father of Raghunätha Bhatta Gosvämé, appeared in the village Rampur, near the river Padma, in Faridpur District of Bangladesh. Despite so much endeavour, Tapana Mishra was uncertain of his life’s direction. Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu came Rampur while performing His vidya-viläsa–lélä on His Purba Banga (East Bengal) visit. At that time, a divine, deity-like person appeared in Tapana Mishra’s dream and said, “Nimäi Paëòita is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Go and surrender unto Him. You will find your way through Him.” When Tapana Mishra woke, he desperately went looking for Nimäi Paëòita, who was glorious and always surrounded by His disciples. Tapana Mishra humbly paid his obeisance and prayed, “I am a very poor, worthless person. Please free me from the bondage of this material world. I do not know my life path. Instruct me by Your mercy.”
The most merciful Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu said smilingly, “Your desperate desire to worship Kåñëa is very rare. The results that can be achieved by meditation on Lord Viñëu in Satya-yuga, by the sacrifices performed in Treta-yuga, and by serving the deity in Dväpara-yuga, can all be achieved in this Kali-yuga only by congregational chanting of Çré Hari.”
Thus when Mahäprabhu instructed Tapana Mishra his due course of action, Tapan Misra paid obeisance to Him as his Lord and longed to go to Navadvépa with Him. Mahäprabhu then ordered Tapana Mishra instead to go Väräëasé, consoling him with the assurance that they would meet again. Later, Mahäprabhu visited Väräëasé on the invitation of Tapana Mishra, staying in his home and taking prasäda. At that time, Mahäprabhu also rescued the Mäyäväda sannyäsés.
Alas, it is a matter of great sorrow that at present there is no sign of Rampur village or the home of Tapana Mishra.
