Katadia (Jagannatha Dasa)

Jagannatha Dasa, a disciple of Çréla Gadädhara Paëòita, resided in Kasthakata. He was born in a Brahmin family on the auspicious occasion of Çré Nåsiàha-caturdaçéaround the year 1488AD. According to Çré ÇréRädhä-Kåñëa-ganoddesa-dipika, he was tilakinigopé, an associate of Citra-gopé. His father’s name was Sarvänanda, but at an early age he lost his parents and was raised by his uncle. While Caitanya Mahäprabhu was revealing and performing his pastimes, Sri Jagannatha Dasa received an instruction in a dream to meet Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhuin Shantipur, where He was surrounded by several devotees. Later, Jagannatha Dasa was initiated by Çréla Gadädhara Paëòita. Therefore, He is a branch of Çréla Gadädhara Paëòita.

The fifteenth branch was Śrīnātha Cakravartī; the sixteenth, Uddhava; the seventeenth, Jitāmitra; and the eighteenth, Jagannatha Dasa.

According to the book called Çakhänirnaya, he was preaching Kåñëa consciousness in Tripura. Later, He came back to Kasthakata and was married. Once,he lost the Çré Dämodaraçéla worshipped by His ancestors. Heartbroken, he went to the banks of a kunòanear his home, Ghasipukur, where he began a fast. Later, the deity of Çré Yasha-Madhava appeared to him in a dream. Jagannatha Dasa started serving the deity. Some time later he accepted service under the Nawab of Bangla. The Nawab, being satisfied with his work, provided Jagannatha Dasa ownership of the village named Arial. After that, Jagannatha Dasa transferred his residence to Arial with the deity of Yasha-Madhava.

The descendants of Jagannatha dasa brought the Yasha-Madhava deity to West Bengal after Partition in1947. They resided in different places in West Bengal. Nowadays, this particular deity of Yasha-Madhava is being worshipped in Çré Sacinandana Gosvämé’s house, very close to BouBazar in the town of Çré Navadvépa.

Katadia is now situated in Munsiganj district, Bangladesh. Nowadays there is no significant identification of Sripateither in Kashtakataor Arial. Arial is situated at Tangibari in the same district.
