Gita Jayanti

Gita Jayanti

Gita Jayanti is the day when Lord Krishna, 5000 years ago, delivered the confidential knowledge of devotional service in the form of the Bhagavad-Gita to His dear most devotee Arjuna. The transcendental knowledge of Bhagavad-Gita is spoken by Sri Krishna so that mankind can understand the real purpose of human life and advance on the path of surrender to His lotus feet.

The purpose of Bhagavad-Gita is to deliver mankind from the nescience of material existence. Just as Arjuna was in difficulty in having to fight the Battle of Kurukshetra, similarly each one of us is in difficulty in various ways in material existence. Arjuna completely surrendered unto Lord Krishna, and consequently this Bhagavad-Gita was spoken to him, delivering him from his illusion. Every one of us is full of anxiety, because of material existence, and by hearing Bhagavad Gita we can similarly be delivered.

Gita Jayanti is an annual celebration commemorating the the first day of  battle of Kurukshetra, when Lord Krishna offered his philosophical teachings to prince Arjuna. When Arjuna hesitated to fight against his cousins the Kaurav as in the battle, Lord Krishna expounded the truth of life and the philosophy of Karma (Action), Jana (Knowledge) ,Dhyana (Meditation) and Bhakti (Devotional Service)  to him, thereby revealing one of the world’s greatest scriptures, the Bhagabad-Gita.

Gita Jayanti is performed many ISKCON temples all over the world wherein devotees recite the entire Bhagavad-Gita. A Gita Book Marathon also takes place (in December) and devotees all over the world take part actively in distributing Bhagavad-Gita to everyone irrespective of religion, creed, cast etc.
